
A/B Testing Your Team Events: What We Found
Product people A/B test everything. Landing pages, onboarding flows, email subject lines. We obsess over conversion rates and statistical significance for features that affect user behavior by fractions of a percent. But when it comes to planning internal team events, we suddenly abandon all that rigor and go with "pizza and bowling should be fun."
Six months ago, I decided to treat our team events the same way I treat our product. Run experiments, measure outcomes, and let the data tell us what works. We're a 28-person team at TeamOutings, which is small enough to be informal but large enough that not everyone knows each other well. A decent test group.
Here's what we tested and what we learned.
Experiment 1, Tuesday vs Thursday events
We'd always done team outings on Thursdays, mostly because it felt close enough to the weekend that people would be in a good mood. But we had a hunch that mid-week events might get better turnout because people were less likely to have weekend prep commitments.
Over three months, we alternated between Tuesday and Thursday events. Same types of activities, same budget, same notice period.
Results were clear. Tuesday events averaged 82% attendance. Thursday events averaged 68%. The difference was almost entirely driven by people who had standing Thursday commitments (gym classes, childcare handoffs, social plans). Tuesdays had fewer conflicts.

We also noticed something unexpected. People at Tuesday events seemed more energized. My theory is that a mid-week break feels like a gift, while a Thursday event feels like the start of the weekend being organized for you. But that's speculation.
Experiment 2, short notice vs long notice
Conventional wisdom says give people plenty of advance notice. We tested this by alternating between events announced 2 days beforehand and events announced a full week ahead.
I expected the 7-day notice events to win. They didn't.
Attendance was nearly identical (within 3%). But the events announced 2 days before had noticeably better energy. People seemed more spontaneous, more present. The week-ahead events had more people who showed up with a "let's get this over with" attitude, possibly because they'd spent a week fitting it into their mental schedule alongside everything else.
If your team events consistently feel low-energy, try shorter notice periods. Spontaneity can be more motivating than planning. Just make sure the RSVP process is frictionless enough to handle quick turnarounds.
The caveat here is that this only works with frictionless RSVPs. If people need to check calendars, coordinate childcare, or get manager approval, two days isn't enough. Our team has a culture where events are automatically approved, and RSVPing takes literally one tap. If yours doesn't, shorter notice might hurt.
Experiment 3, activity-first vs food-first events
We tested whether leading with the activity (bowling, then drinks) or leading with food (dinner, then optional activity) changed the social dynamics.
Food-first events produced better conversation. People sat down, started talking, and by the time the optional activity began, they'd already formed comfortable groups. Activity-first events had a more fragmented start, with people warming up during the activity and only really connecting socially once it was over.
The one exception was competitive activities. For things like trivia or games, starting with the activity created immediate energy and team bonding that carried into the social time afterwards. Food-first trivia felt flat. Game-first trivia was electric.
Starting with food made trivia feel like homework after dinner. Starting with trivia made dinner feel like a celebration. Same event, completely different vibe.
Experiment 4, large group vs split groups
For two months, we alternated between all-team events (28 people) and split events (two groups of 14, different activities on different days).
This one wasn't close. Split groups won on every metric. People rated smaller events higher for enjoyment, conversation quality, and "did you talk to someone new." The larger events scored higher only on "did this feel like a company event," which isn't the metric we cared about.
What we're doing differently now
Based on six months of data, we've changed our default approach. Events happen on Tuesdays. We give 3-5 days notice (splitting the difference from our test). Non-competitive events start with food. Competitive events start with the game. And we split the team into smaller groups whenever we're over 16 people.
None of these changes are revolutionary. But together they've pushed our average event satisfaction from 7.2 to 8.6 on a 10-point scale. And attendance has stabilized above 80%, up from a previous average around 71%.

You don't need a formal A/B testing framework. Just change one variable at a time and pay attention to the results. Track attendance. Send a one-question survey after each event ("rate this event 1-10"). Compare across different approaches.
After three months, you'll have enough data to make real decisions instead of guessing. And your team events will get measurably better.
